The environment is in shambles; the primary crisis is that they have been using a sports drink, Brawndo, to irrigate all crops because it has "electrolytes" (though no one knows what an electrolyte is). Joe's journey, then, is not just one of survival, but of using his forgotten common sense to navigate a world that has abandoned reason, ultimately finding himself appointed by President Camacho himself to solve the nation's food crisis.
